Can we legally purchase and consume cannabis in France today? Yes and no. Yes, because the state has relaxed its regulations on CBD, consisting of through the Minister of Health. And no, at the same time, because just products containing cannabidiol (CBD), an active compound that does not have the psychedelic results attributed to THC, are considered legal. Let us take stock of what is legal and what is not with regard to cannabis and CBD.

CBD is legal in France, but THC is not

Marijuana needs to not be confused with cannabidiol. Especially considering that the 2nd is legal in certain types in France … While the other is not! Since cannabidiol (understood by the acronym CBD) is simply among the many active compounds from the hemp plant, which does not have the psychedelic results of its cousin THC – the one that makes you “stone”.

In other words, what is typically called “cannabis”, which includes high concentrations of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is still considered a narcotic product. And therefore prohibited in France as in many countries on earth. On the other hand, cannabis which provides pride of place to the cannabinoid referred to as cannabidiol, it is legal as long as its THC levels do not exceed 0.2%.

Nevertheless, the legislation stays vague in France on this subject. Presently, there is no law that makes it clear whether CBD is legal or not. Concretely, it is licensed for sale in the form of E-liquid, to be used in a smokeless cigarette. However it is also discovered in other types (consisting of oil or paste), without its purchase and intake being reprehensible … To try to make it simple, let’s say that CBD is not prohibited by French law, unlike THC

Although CBD and THC are equivalent, they are very different. These are the best understood of the 500 cannabinoids discovered in hemp. And each has its specific results. THC is particularly understood for its psychedelic residential or commercial properties: it causes a change in the state of consciousness by acting straight on the brain. By taking in cannabis rich in THC, we “hover”: wellness, euphoria, relaxation … But also red eyes, dilated students and, sometimes, stress and anxiety or even paranoia.

CBD has nothing to do with it. It is not blissful. It does not trigger stress and anxiety or stress and anxiety attacks. On the contrary: cannabidiol is in the procedure of making its way by virtue of its useful therapeutic results. CBD assists alleviate pain and swelling, lower stress and anxiety, ease the suffering of victims of stress and anxiety attacks and anxiety, and even treat certain diseases (such as epilepsy or Alzheimer’s). In addition, it has an extremely low toxicity and presents (practically) no addicting risk, even if the lack of scientific research studies decreases these attributes to simple hypotheses.

Legalization of CBD rise in France: should we go further?

Definitely, the legal development regarding CBD is positive, but everything stays to be done. The health ministry wishes to beware, and the federal government’s position on the matter looks like a balancing act. At the same time, the National Medicines Agency has clearly spoken up. We therefore take care of the goat and the cabbage so as not to get too included, while the vaporized cannabidiol has been offered in France for a couple of years already, taking advantage of the legal vagueness that continues.

Beyond the 0.2% THC limit licensed in marketed products, it needs to be borne in mind that just the liquid kind of CBD (intended for smokeless cigarettes) is really legal. The purchase and intake of resin or smoking herb is therefore not managed, particularly considering that the THC level is frequently higher (around 15%). In addition, just using seeds and fibers is licensed in France. However what about CBD oil, which enables you to take pleasure in the benefits of the compound without exposing your lungs to possibly hazardous smoke? What about composite CBD paste? On these subjects, there is radio silence.

In addition, CBD is considered a “dietary supplement”, which prohibits providing it as a medicine. And make it an enlightened ad for users and clients. Regrettable, because, in the meantime, many potential beneficiaries are not taking advantage of it. It is therefore needed to go further and clarify things: more than a concern of consumer well-being, it is a matter of public health.
